Cuba losses five-setter, Canada and Mexico go down

 

KATOWICE, Poland, September 1, 2014- Ojansivu Olli-Pekka's superb performance led World No 26 Finland to rebound from 2 sets behind and win a grueling five setter against world No 7 Cuba 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-23, 15-12) in front of excited crowd mostly supporting the winners at Spodek Hall in Katowice, Poland on Monday. 

 

Finland's Olli-Pekka topped the scorers list with impressive 23 points, while Javier Jimenez led the losers with 21. 

 

In Gdansk, Canada played its FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship opener today, and fell to volleyball giants Russia in three sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) in Pool C, at the Ergo Arena. 

 

The 2.18 cm Dmitriy Muserskiy was the Russian top scorer with 18 based on his consistent serving and attacking.  Canada’s top scorer today was Gavin Schmitt, who contributed 11 points.
 
Also in Gdansk, Bulgaria drained Mexico in straight sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) to earn their opening day victory in Pool C.

 

Todor Aaleksiev was the top scorer of Bulgaria with 14 points while Daniel Vargas finished with 10 points for Mexico.
