Cuba won its first gold medal

LIMA, Peru, May 18, 2019 - Cuba faced the Dominican Republic and won 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 15-25, 15-10) conquering its first gold medal in the U20 Pan-American Cup- Herbalife Cup, sporting event that also gave them the FIVB World Championship classification.

Ailama Cese once again commanded the Cuban offensive adding 29 points for the victory of his country, Ivy Vila accompanied her with 13 units and Thalía Moreno closed with 11. For the Dominican Republic, Madeline Guillén got 30 points and Natalia Martinez 19.

Cuba won showing greater strength in attack (54-51) and service (9-7). The Dominican Republic, on the other hand, was superior in blocking (7-9). The winning team incurred 33 unforced errors, and 23 Dominican ones.

Tomás Fernández, coach of Cuba: I am very happy for this great victory, the effort and work that the girls have done has been so great and today everything paid off. In the game against Dominicana we came with a script, the girls left the game but for the fifth set played more with the heart and achieved gold.

Talía Moreno, Cuban captain: In the first two sets we were very superior, but they are a very prepared team and they knew how to turn the game around. For the fifth set, we went out motivated because we wanted to give our country a new joy, we came out with everything and we were able to close the game.

Cristian Cruz, Dominican coach: I think we had enough to win the game, but against Cuba you cannot give space, and we lacked to be more aggressive in the service. This tournament has been a nice experience and the girls had a great learning experience.
