Cuban López named MVP of NORCECA Championship
WINNIPEG, Canada, September 8, 2019 – Cuban Miguel Ángel
López, who led the offense of the 2019 NORCECA men’s
champions, was named as Most Valuable Player of the biennial
competition that finished on Saturday.
Lopez, the second best scorer of the event and fourth best
server, was one of three Cuban players awarded during the
closing ceremony chaired by NORCECA President Cristobal
Marte Hoffiz, who presented him with a plaque.
Roamy Alonso and Osniel Melgarejo, the first middle blocker
and the best server, were the other two Cubans among the
awardees.
Torey DeFalco, first outside hitter, Jeffrey Jendrik, second
middle blocker, and Kyle Dagostino, best libero and best
digger, were the USA players included in the individual
awards.
Luis García and Maurice Torres of Puerto Rico, received
plaques as best setter and best opposite hitter, while Henry
Tapia of the Dominican Republic, was the best scorer.
Mexican Jesus Rangel and Canadian Timothy Maar received
plaques as best receiver and second outside hitter,
respectively.
The next competition is the NORCECA Men’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament to be held in January with Cuba,
Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico battling for one ticket to
Tokyo 2020. The site is still to be decided.
