Four women teams unbeaten on opening day  

 

KRALENDIJK, Bonaire, September 26, 2019 - The quartet of Mexico, Guatemala, USA-B and Canada-A all ended with 2-0 win loss after the opening day of matches at  the Seventh Leg of the 2019 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour Circuit in very hot and humid conditions on Thursday.

 

In Pool A, Mexico´s top seeded team of Zaira Orellana and Martha Revuelta battled past Canada-B duo, Jae-Lyn Visscher and Alyssa Wolf 21-18, 23-21 and also defeated USA-A pair, Melissa Fuchs, and Lindsay Fuller 21-17, 21-16.

 

Fuller and Fuchs earlier defeated Curacao´s Angjeny Tolentino and Leandra Savonije 21-14, 21-18 while the latter stunned Visscher and Wolf 21-14, 15-21, 15-13 to stay alive for the quarterfinal spot.

 

Guatemalans Estefanie Bethancourt and Natalia Giron ended 2-0 by beating rivals, Kathya Vasquez and Fernanda Vargas of El Salvador, 20-22, 21-15, 15-6, as well as Nicaraguans Valeria Swan and Lolette Rodriguez 21-18, 21-16 in Pool B.

 

Both Nicaragua and El Salvador are 1-1 and meet to determine the second qualifier from the pool.

 

And in Pool C, USA-B´s Aurora Davis and Alexandra, and Canada-A´s Victoria Cowley and Alina Dormann are sure to qualify to the quarterfinals.

 

This after USA-B won versus Bonaire youngsters Sara Lorini and Deyanira Verolme 21-7, 21-0 and TTO´s Rheeza Grant and Malika Davidson 13-21, 21-16, 15-10 while Cowley and Dormann beat TTO 21-19, 21-11 and Bonaire, 21-9, 21-6.

 

Overall, there are 12 teams in the women’s tournament in three groups at the end of which the top two in each group will qualify to the main draw knockout for positions first to eighth and will be joined by the two best third placed teams from the three pools, while the remaining teams will compete for places ninth to 12th.

 

Due to the humid conditions there will be break intermissions of about four hours from 12 noon to 4 pm on each day, a decision which was agreed upon by the host country and the Control Committee headed by Tournament Director, Daymian Stewart.
