GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, April 22, 2016 – The Guatemalan
duo of Erick Garrido and Andy Leonardo upset top-seeded Daneil
Williams and Fabien Whitfield of Trinidad & Tobago with a
dramatic victory in day one of the men’s competition at the
Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the fifth stop of
the NORCECA Circuit on Friday.
In Pool A, Garrido/Leonardo edged Williams/Whitfield, silver
medalists in the previous event in Guanacaste, Costa Rica,
16-21, 22-20, 21-19 in 1 hour and seven minutes. Earlier on
Friday, the Guatemalan pair had won a classic Central American
duel over Ruben Mora and Danny Lopez of Nicaragua also in three
sets 21-15, 17-21, 16-14 in a match that lasted 53 minutes.
In Pool B, brothers Taylor and Trevor Crabb of United States-A,
champions in Guatemala City, won their two matches of opening
day first over compatriots Ed Ratledge and Ty Loomis of United
States-B (22-20, 21-17) and then against Triston Hitchman and
Christopher Walters of Jamaica (21-8, 21-10). Ratledge/Loomis
won 21-15, 21-15 against Marc Lomeli and Brian Kwasny of U.S.
Virgin Islands who had outdueled Hitchman/Walters 19-21, 23-21,
15-9 in 54 minutes.
Meanwhile in Pool C, Richard Smith and Bryan Monge of Costa Rica
and Carlos Escobar and David Vargas of El Salvador will play for
the top place on Saturday in a Central American battle.
Smith/Monge saw off St Clair Hodge and Kemoroy Percival of St
Kitts & Nevis (21-19, 21-12) and edged Jesús Oliva and Manuel
Serrano of Honduras 21-16, 24-22. Escobar/Vargas won 24-22,
21-16 over Oliva/Serrano and 21-16, 21-7 against Hodge/Percival.
In Pool D, Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantinga of Canada-A,
the champions of Guanacaste, triumphed over countrymen Aaron
Nusbaum and Ryan Vanderburg (21-17, 21-16) and against Giandro
Tokay and Henrich Daal of Curacao (21-16, 21-13). Tokay/Daal
defeated Olney Thompson and Phillippe Deslandes of Cayman
Islands (22-20, 21-17) while Nusbaum/Vanderburg beat Thompson/Deslandes
(21-11, 21-7).
