Cuba’s women show power
PUERTO ARISTA, Chiapas, May 20, 2012 - With a flawless defense,
Cuban duo Niriam Sinal and Ion Canet won the gold this Sunday
during the fourth stop of the VI NORCECA Beach Volleyball
Circuit, after beating Americans Michelle Moriarty and Traci
Weamer in two tight sets (22-20, 25-23) before more than 2,000
spectators.
The islanders had to work hard in the semifinal match before
defeating the Mexican duo of Vanessa Virgen and Martha Revuelta
in three sets (17-21, 25-23, 15-11).
“The key was our tactical discipline to which we stuck
throughout the match. This gave us the pportunity to
counterattack and we scored enough points to play with greater
confidence during the decisive moments,” explained Sinal at the
end of the match, her body still covered with sand after such a
fierce confrontation.
“We feel right at home here in Chiapas because spectators are
just wonderful to us. I hope to play here next year,” said Canet
as she smiled triumphantly.
The bronze medal went to Mexico’s Virgen and Revuelta who
overpowered Canada’s Caleigh Whitaker and Victoria Altamore
21-18, 21-17. Canada had lost to United States in the semifinals
21-16, 21-14.
