Ontiveros and Virgen of Mexico topped Tavares BVB stage

TAVARES, Florida, USA, September 13, 2015. - Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen of Mexico topped the 5th stop of the NORCECA BVB 2015 Tour at the Hickory Point Beach Sand Volleyball Complex in Tavares, Florida.

Pan-American Champions, Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen of Mexico, won their second Gold medal of the season in their second NORCECA event of the year while defeating Derek Olson and Jeremy Casebeer USA-A 2-0 (21-10, 21-18).

Ontiveros and Virgen led the entire first set comfortably with a big 6-1 early lead with superiority in blocking and defending; they had no mercy over Olson and Casebeer, who had several unforced errors, especially in serves. Things turned around in the second set, as the Americans led up to half the set with great effort in defense; but the Mexican duo managed to stay focused and turn the score around.

“The gold medal match was mentally challenging” said Virgen. “We took advantage of their errors in the first set; they gave us many opportunities to lead. They got really better than us in the second set and led almost entirely, but we stayed calm because we didn’t want to reach a third set; they are experienced players and play very well. Thank God we managed to win” he added.

Mexico faced Fabien Whitfield/Daneil Williams of Trinidad and Tobago in semifinals, managing to win after a rocky first set, 2-0 (22-20, 21-12). In the other men’s semifinal, Derek Olson/Jeremy Casebeer of USA-A defeated Dan Dearing/Garret May of Canada-B coming from behind 2-1 (14-21, 26-24, 15-12).
