Wheelan of Canada won their first gold medal at 2016 NORCECA
Tour Beach Volleyball winning the final against Daneil Williams/Fabien
Whitfield of Trinidad and Tobago in two exciting sets (25-23,
21-15).
After battling in the first set, defined with two effective
services by Wheelan, the Canadians took an early lead in the
second and did not allow their rivals to recover, getting their
best result in 2016 as they were fourth at the previous stop in
La Paz, Mexico.
Plantinga/Wheelan advanced to the final after winning 2-1
(21-19, 13-21, 15-12) over McLachlin/Evans of United States. In
the other semifinal, Williams/ Whitfield outscored Andy
Leonardo/ Luis Garcia of Guatemala by 2-0 (21-16, 21-15).
The pair from Trinidad and Tobago was fourth in the first leg of
the tour in Guatemala City and improved their game to get into
the finals.
In the match for third place, Leonardo/Garcia achieved a great
result winning over McLachlin/Evans 2-1 (21-10, 14-21, 15-12)
for the first podium by the Central American duo in 2016.
