The men's title battle kicked off in San Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, October 8, 2021 - The XX Major Central American Beach Volleyball Championship began this Friday on the courts of the Salvadoran Volleyball Federation in this City, with the participation of 23 couples, from the seven countries of the region.

In the men's tournament there are 12 duos, those who play in four groups of three pairs, the best two advancing to the quarterfinals that will be played this Saturday.

Costa Rica has the highest number of titles in these tournaments with 9, with a hegemony from 2004 to 2012, when Guatemala won two in a row. In recent years, Guatemala has 4 gold medals (5 in total) and Nicaragua 3.


The winning couple of the last two Championships, Nicaraguans Danny López and Rubén Mora, began with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) victory over Edgar Maldonado / Santiago Penagos, from Guatemala, for group A. José Fernández / Daniel Dyner (CRC 2) beat Maldonado / Penagos 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-13).

 

In group B, Denis López and Cristopher Cascante (NCA2) beat Panama 2-0 (21-11, 21-18) with José González / Jason Quintero. Meanwhile, Andy Leonardo and Luis García (GUA 1) beat the Panamanian couple 2-0 (21-15, 27-25) in a close match.

 

Salvadorans David Vargas / Favio López, beat Irvin Reyes / Kevin Herrera, from Honduras, 2-1 (21-18, 18-21, 15-11) for group C, which also includes Sebastián Valenciano / Boris Duarte, Costa Rica, who beat Reyes / Herrera 2-1 (20-22, 21-12, 15-8).

Group D closed the day with Wilfredo Vega / Adonis Rodríguez, from Honduras, beating Belize 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) with Edgar Martínez / Joseph Carnegie. While the Salvadoran couple Franklin Flores and Armando Guatemala beat Belize 2-0 (21-14, 21-13).

 

This Saturday the group stage matches continue and in the afternoon the quarterfinal crosses will take place.
