Top female teams win twice to start Cayman Islands actions

 

   

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Island, April 22, 2016 – USA team of Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen, bronze medalists in Guanacaste, started on off the right foot at the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament winning both of their matches in Pool A in the opening of the NORCECA Circuit competition at Seven Mile Beach on Friday.

 

Flint/Larsen first defeated compatriots Greena Urango and Angela Bensend of USA-B (22-20, 21-12) and then beat Brenda Allen and Genelle Howell of St Kitts & Nevis (21-8, 21-6). Top-seeded Julie Gordon and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada-A downed Allen/Howell (21-12, 21-16) but then lost to Urango/Bensend (21-19, 21-18).

 

In Pool B, Claudia Rios and Gloria Santoyo of Mexico won a three-set battle over Megan Nagy and Marie-Christine Lapointe of Canada-B (19-21, 21-13, 15-6) and dispatched Shantell Arnold and Kelsey Balderamos of Belize (21-10, 21-7). Nagy/Lapointe recovered to win also in three sets (21-19, 24-26, 15-10) against Gloria Avalos/Laura Molina of El Salvador who had won 21-14, 24-22 over Arnold/Balderamos.

 

 In Pool C, Karen Cope and Nathalia Alfaro of Costa Rica won both their contests of day one against Manika Charles and Lisa Jedlicka of U.S. Virgin Islands (21-12, 21-13) and followed with a dominating victory over Chante Smith and Marisa Harrison of Cayman Islands-B (21-8, 21-3). Also, Ayana Dyette and Malika Davidson of Trinidad & Tobago won 21-14, 21-11 over Charles/Jedlicka and 21-13, 21-17 against Smith/Harrison.

 

In Pool D, Elia Torres and Lolette Rodriguez of Nicaragua and Jessica Wolfenden and Stefania Gandolfi of Cayman Islands-A succeeded in their two matches on Friday. Torres/Rodriguez edged Alicia Malcolm and Sashalee Wallen of Jamaica (16-21, 21-17, 15-13) and beat Christianne Etches and Jarisa Hynds of Honduras (21-14, 21-9). Wolfenden/Gandolfi won 21-17, 21-11 over Etches/Hynds and 21-13, 21-19 against Malcolm/Wallen.
