USA qualify to top second phase at U20 World Championship

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico, July 14, 2019 – United States defeated Cuba in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) for their second victory in three outings in Pool A of the U20 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship on Sunday.

The United States secured a spot among the top eight teams of the final ranking. Cuba lost for third consecutive day and will play in the consolation round.

Logan Eggleston and Molly Phillips finished with 11 and 9 points, respectively, as the best scorers for the United States. Ailama Cese had 11 for Cuba.

Also in Pool A, Italy defeated Mexico 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-15) sending the home team to a 1-2 record and the consolation round. Nkemdilim Enweonwu and Marina Lubian each had 11 points for Italy and Uxue Guereca led Mexico with 10.

In Pool D, Japan beat Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-23). It was the second loss for the Caribbean side that will continue competing for the 9 to 16 positions.

Nichika Yamada and Ameze Miyabe led Japan with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Flormarie Heredia led the Dominicans with 13 points and Madeline Guillén and Natalia Martinez each scored 12 points.
