Venerable Guini Santana passes away

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 4, 2020 – Victor Horacio –Guini- Santana, the only living member of the Dominican Republic Men’s Team that competed at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquillla, Colombia  1946, passed away on Friday. He was 98.

Santana, member of the first class of Dominican Hall of Famers in 1967, also played in the CACG of 1954 in Mexico City and coached the men’s national team at the Pan American Games in Chicago 1959.

The Sport Writers Association of Santo Domingo voted him as the best player of the year in 1945, 1946 and 1952 and coach of the year in 1956.

Despite his age and physical limitations, Santana could be seen frequently watching the training sessions of the Dominican women’s team of which he was an avid follower.

Santana, a powerful attacker during his playing days, also was voted as one of the members of the Dominican Republic’s All-Time Squad.
