St. Eustatius defeats Montserrat for a second time to take bronze

St. JOHNS, Antigua, September, 11, 2016 –    St. Eustatius took just under an hour (56 minutes) to trounce Montserrat in straight sets (25-14, 25-14 and 25 -16) and doing so took the bronze medal. It was the second time that these two teams met and the result was the same but this time around St. Eustatius was more emphatic and did not allow Montserrat to win a set.

The victory was built around the attacking play of Shastri Rivers who recorded 13 Spikes whilst Jantsen Patrick complimented him with 7 points (5 Spikes and 2 blocks)

At the team level Montserrat could not match St. Eustatius who led in Spikes (25-12) Blocks (7-0) and Serves (8-4)

Coach Edmond Hook of St. Eustatius was happy with his podium place. “The guys really came out and executed the game plan as we wanted them to. I think the key factor was that desire to win. They really did not want to go back home in last place and that gave them extra drive”, he disclosed.

Coach Denfield Morris of Montserrat was very upbeat for a coach that had lost all the games.  “To have come away with a podium place would have been icing on the cake for us but I feel like I am on the podium as a result of how my young charges played. This was actually their first time in any form of competitive tournament and in three short days I have seen them pour out effort and improve night after night. Tonight at the expense of a medal we allowed them to play extra minutes in order for them to get the exposure and experience and I am satisfied with the outcome”, he said.

Both teams however will not progress from the ECVA World Cup Qualifying group A for men.
