AFECAVOL Qualifier to Nanjing 2014 in Guatemala
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, January 29, 2014 - The National
Volleyball Federation of Guatemala announced the AFECAVOL Zone
Qualifier to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, to take
place at Campo Marte on Saturday and Sunday February 1-2.
Enrique Santis, President of the Guatemalan Federation and Marta
Centeno Sajche, President of AFECAVOL, along with Mrs. Lorena
Toriello, Member of the Executive Committee of the Guatemalan
Olympic Committee, explained the details of the event as well as
the qualification system to the Youth Olympic Games which grants
a direct ticket per gender for the Central American region.
Santis indicated “this tournament is part of the development
program of the NORCECA Confederation and the FIVB, with the
support of AFECAVOL and the Guatemalan Olympic Committee, making
this a unique opportunity for any athlete to make possible their
Olympic dream”.
The event features a team of each gender from
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá and host
Guatemala, with the winners booking the ticket to the Youth
Olympic Games to be held in August at Nanjing, China, with six
teams in both genders from the NORCECA Confederation.
Marta Centeno said the AFECAVOL stage is the last sub zonal
event of the NORCECA Confederation.
“The winner will represent Central America and the second and
third place of each gender, will still have the chance to
qualify to the Games at the NORCECA final playoff in Puerto
Rico, for the two remaining spots available,” she said.
Finally, the local teams, coached by Alberto Ozuna were
presented with Natalia Giron and Estefanie Bethancourt in the
female division and the male duo formed by Erik Flores y Mark
Alvarez.
