After a successful training camp, Dominicans are ready to match
Germany
ROME, Italy, September 22, 2014 - After closing their training
camp in Slovenia, the Dominican Women’s National team is ready
to play their first match at the FIVB Women’s World
Championship.
They played their last scrimmage match against Serbia in
Liubljana last weekend. Many of the players who attended to this
training camp have a lot in common as well as the
representatives of the German team that will match the Caribbean
squad on Tuesday.
The training camp reunited some familiar faces like Tijana
Malesevic and Stefana Veljkovic, who played at the FIVB Youth
Girls World Championship in Baja California in 2007 as well as
some Dominicans did it.
On the same way, the match between Germany and Dominican
Republic will bring back some memories of an odissey lived in
Northern Mexico five years ago.
In 2009 Dominican Republic and Germany played for the Gold Medal
in Mexicali, Mexico at the FIVB Women’s Junior World
Championship.
Germany claimed the crown after a 3-0 victory (28-26, 26-24,
25-16). It was and Age Group competition, but with some familiar
faces, considering that Lenka Dürr, Lena Möllers, Laura
Weihenmaier and Anja Brandt, were part of the roster at the
time. Now, they are part of the senior team.
However for the Dominican squad this was the beginning to a
successful road for a brilliant generation of athletes like
libero Brenda Castillo, Mariane Fersola, Candida Arias, Camile
Dominguez, Ana Yorkira Binet, Erasma Moreno and Niverka Marte,
who was the captain during the Junior World Championship.
These players conformed the silver medal winning team of 2009
and have worked together with the rest of seniors who have a
combined and balanced experience in Continental, Pan American
and World Grand Prix competitions, as well as Central American,
Pan American and Olympic Games. |
