ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, May 7, 2016 – A small but easily excitable
home crowd was on hand to spur on the Antigua and Barbuda U 18
girls as they got the better of St. Martin in a thrilling 3-1
encounter. The match was a typical Ding -Dong battle with
numerous lead changes and tied scores.
One team made run the other came back and went ahead and this
went on throughout the games and when it matter most Antigua/
Barbuda was able to hold their poise and win 25 -16, 22-25,
29-27 and 25-23.
As the score reflects the games were really close and could have
gone either way.
Coach Lewis was full of glee.
“Of course I am happy with the victory but this is not yet the
ultimate it is just one step in the right direction. Through
this tough encounter relied on Joseanne Lewis quite a great
deal. She is the work horse of the team and today she delivered
when it was crunch time.
Captain Britney Gore played a very vocal role urging her
teammates on as she rotated on and off the bench. I made some
error myself and scored a few points but I kept on telling them
to stay focus and that we could do it” she said.
A team high 14 points from Outside Hitter Joseanne Lewis
supported the coach’s claim that she was the work horse of the
Antigua team. She had 9 spikes of the team 15, chipped in with 3
blocks and topped her performance with 2 points from the service
line.
St. Martin’s Middle blocker Amanda Sylves had a game high 15
points she was able supported by Joy Birarda with 11 but both
efforts were in vain.
Despite winning the game team Antigua Barbuda trailed in the
Spike category 26-15 but they dominated the Blocks 10 -2 and
indeed it was a crucial block that gave them the final point in
game 4. They also held the edge in service points garnered 11-8.
St. Martin Captain Mailee Ehrmann was close to tears as she
admitted that it was a tough game to lose especially when
victory was so close. “We have to come back those other two
games so my job now is to cheer up my teammates as they are a
bit down but we can do it” she concluded. |
