ST JOHN’S, Antigua/Barbuda, May 14, 2016 – Antigua Barbuda
encountered little resistance in putting away St. Vincent and
the Grenadines (SVG) in straight sets 25-15, 25-9 and 25-6 in
the curtains game of day 1 of the ECVA Youth Boys Competition.
In doing so they chalked up their second victory and secured a
berth in the finals to play against Grenada (who won both
matches as well).
Antigua 6-footers in Cairon Davis and Amoy Lee ruled the net as
Team SVG could find no match for their power hitting and
imposing presence at the net when blocking.
Coach Olsen Joseph of Antigua was all smiles after the game.
Based on his early predictions his team is exactly where he
predicted it to be. “This time around the nervousness was gone
and so my players were able to support each other more, play at
a faster pace and executed the plan. Having said that I must
admit that we expected a greater fight from St. Vincent and the
Grenadines but I guess they are in a rebuilding stage and proved
to be no match for us,” he reported.
Captain Cairon Davis agreed with his coach. “It really felt good
out there dominating the game especially since we thought they
would come stronger, so yes putting them away was a real fun,”
he admitted.
The three sets ended in 54 minutes as Amoy Lee playing in the
Opposite Hitter position collected 13 points and his captain
Cairon Davis (Middle Blocker) poured in 11 for the winning team.
Only two of the starters for Team SVG got on the scoreboard and
the numbers are not worthy of note.
At the end of the game the team scoreboard showed some lopsided
figures. Antigua Barbuda had 27 kills to SVG 3. Antigua/Barbuda
had 4 blocks compare to none by SVG and the winners had 8 points
from the service line to their opponents 1.
Round three in the ECVA Youth Boys would have very little impact
on the tournament as the two already determined finalists
(Antigua Barbuda and Grenada) meet and will most probably test
each other while the two teams losing teams so far will aim for
their first taste of victory. |
