Antigua/Barbuda grabs consolation bronze over St. Kitts/Nevis
Oranjestad, St. Eustatius, July 13, 2014 – Antigua/Barbuda came
out with all smiles after a straight sets victory (27-25;25-21
and 25-19) over St. Kitts/ Nevis in the bronze medal playoff
game in the ECVA Senior Female Volleyball competition.
The score sheet showed that Antigua Barbuda was dominant in all
scoring departments. They had a huge advantage in spikes 47 –
25; led in blocks 8-2 and effected 5 aces to St. Kitts/Nevis.
We certainly did not get what we came for but we are definitely
happy that we are not going home empty handed said coach Esron
Gittens of Antigua. We had a good idea of what St. Kitts/Nevis
would come with and so we decided to build the momentum as the
game went on. This worked in our favour as we seem to be the
fitter team” he noted.
Captain Vannessa Burke also shared her satisfaction. “The girls
are all excited about taking the bronze. It is not exactly what
we preferred but we will take that as opposed to nothing. We now
have to regroup and come stronger and better in the next
tournament” she indicated.
The coach of the St. Kitts team was furious. “I was banking on
taking home something if not the gold or silver then the bronze.
It is very hard to go home with nothing. It is even more
difficult to swallow when I know that my team has the potential
to do better.
His captain Antoinette Henry was equally upset. “Our offense
turned up some weak performances when crucially necessary and
our communication especially when we were trailing was woeful
she reported.
On the individual score sheet Sharon Payne of Antigua was
outstanding with 23 points made up mainly from 21 spikes. Next
in line was Naheemah Wilson with 13 (12 spikes). Antoinette
Henry and Brenda Allen led the Kittitians with 10 points each
but in a losing cause. |
