Canada with two teams in men’s quarterfinals

 

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, April 9, 2011. - Canada booked its two pairs in the men’s quarterfinals of the Gatorade Beach Volleyball Tournament in Guatemala, the second stage for the 2011 NORCECA Circuit.

 

Christian Redmann and Benjamin Saxton of Canada-1 got their free pass to the quarterfinals as Pool A winners while Maverick Hatch and Samuel Schachter of Canada-2 defeated Fabien Whitfield and Daniel Williams of Trinidad & Tobago 22-20, 21-15.

 

Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwood of Puerto Rico battled to make the cut against USA-2 team, Steven Vanderwerp and Matt McKinney in a three set match that finished 22-20, 19-21 and 15-13.

 

Also advancing are Cubans Karel Peña and Javier Jimenez, with a 21-8 win in both sets over Douglas Izaguirre and Manfredo Hernandez of Honduras.

 

Mexico stayed in the fight to the finals when Juan Virgen and Aldo Miramontes crushed Julio Recinos and Rodrigo Gonzalez of Guatemala-2 by 21-8, 21-13.

 

Erick Garrido and Andy Leonardo of Guatemala-1 grabbed a place in the finals defeating Jeovanny Medrano and David Vargas of El Salvador 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) in a great Central American battle.

 

The last team to join the quarterfinals was the Dominican Republic’s duo of Yewddy Perez and German Recio who prevailed over Carl Steadroy Collins/Kemoroy Percival of St. Kitts & Nevis 21-12, 21- 13.

 

The quarterfinals to be held on Sunday morning features: CAN-1 vs. GUA-1; CUB vs. USA-1; MEX vs. DOM; CAN-2 vs. PUR.
