Argentina claims Pan American Title

TORONTO, Canada, July 21, 2015. – Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug of Argentina claimed the Women’s Beach Volleyball Pan American Title defeating Cuban Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez  2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-7) at the Toronto Pan American Games.

With the spectacular Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre sold out completely, Ana Gallay and Georgina celebrated Argentina’s first Pan American Beach Volleyball Gold ever.

The South American team started off strong, calculating every move and dominating with power over the net which turned out in Cuban errors in the first set. It was another story in the second set, Cuba pressed hard with service points, with powerful kills and enjoying the spotlight, while Argentina’s blocks failed repeatedly. Ana and Georgina defense responded well to shorten Lianma and Leila’s advantage and Cuba won set two after reaching three set points. Argentina scored in the third set thru aces and with a comeback in their blocking; they won the Gold with huge advantage.

“We faced Cuba in the preliminary round and lost, we didn’t know them but that’s why we were better prepared today and with a day off giving us a chance to recover well” said Ana Gallay. “Cuba was a tough opponent but we played with heart” she added.

Georgina Klug on winning the gold medal said “it’s not only about one game, it’s a whole preparation program and about many matches; it wasn’t easy. We can’t believe we won and we are thrilled, it’s wonderful. Thank you Canada for this amazing experience and Way to Go Argentina”.

Lili Maestrini and Carol Horta of Brazil easily defeated Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke 2-0 (21-9, 21-14) for the Bronze Medal. The Brazilian tandem had little errors in their performance and aced on numerous occasions thru out the entire match, this was crucial for the win.

“We used our sadness of not being in the final match to win this bronze medal” said Lili. “It is a great victory and there are no words to explain how important the medal is for me. Being at the Pan Am Games is a dream come true” she added.
