Argentina complete the semifinalists at Pan Am Cup
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, June 17, 2014 – Argentina defeated Cuba 3-1
(25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) and qualified to the semifinals of
the XIII Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Tuesday.
Argentina held the advantage in attacks (58-51) and gave away 21
points with unforced errors compared to 28 by the losers.
Leticia Boscacci and Josefina Fernandez each recorded 18 points
in the victory while Sol Piccolo and Emilce Sosa contributed 10
points apiece.
Damara Lescay was the best scorer for Cuba with 16 points,
followed by Alena Orta and Melissa Vargas each with 13 tallies.
Sulian Matienzo added 11 in the losing effort.
“It is very important for us to reach the semifinals,”
Argentina’s coach Guillermo Orduna said. “We brought here a team
with some variations but the team functioned as an unit and I am
happy about that.”
“We went out to play Argentina but could not solve their game
plan,” Cuba’s Juan Carlos Gala said. “We could have played
better. Now we have a day off to prepare for the fifth place
match against Canada on Thursday.” |
