Argentina depends on subs to beat Colombia

TORONTO, Canada, July 19, 2015 – Argentina relied mostly on bench players to beat Colombia in straight-sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-21) in the second day of the men’s volleyball tournament at the Pan American Games in Toronto at Exhibition Center.

It was the second victory for the South American team coached by Julio Velasco and the second defeat for the Colombian side coached by Cuban Eliseo Ramos.

Argentina dominated the one-sided contest with advantages in blocks (9-1), aces (6-2) and attacks (41-30).

Martin Ramos led the Argentinean attack with 17 points, including two blocks and one ace, while Ezequiel Palacios and Maximiliano Gauna contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the victory.

Andres Piza was the only Colombian with double figures in the scoring with 12 points. Carlos Almonia finished with eight.

Julio Velasco, Coach of Argentina: “We look forward to finish our Pool phase in first place, so we have to prepare now against Brazil. Playing against them is always complicated. It is a classic South American battle. We decided to give some rest to our main starters and played with our back up men, to be ready for our next match.”

Facundo Conte, Player of Argentina: “Despite we played with an alternate team, I feel happy. They showed a solid performance with a great attitude and we are looking for that”.

Javier Filardi, Captain of Argentina: “It was a little bit complicated in the end, but we are glad because we won. Some players were changed to start but the most important thing was to win, so we expect to play a good match against Brazil”.

Ezequiel Palacios, Player of Argentina: “I feel great because of the things we did on the court as we received more chances to play.

These are my first Pan American Games and I have enjoyed them a lot every day, the atmosphere, the village. I have a good impression about it”.

Eliseo Ramos, Coach of Colombia: “We are with a young team that has no previous competitive experience, and you have to be prepared for this kind of tournaments. We played with a new lineup. Our setter gave a new rhythm to the team and we fought harder in the last set. That makes me feel happy. I expect we can improve as long as the tournament goes on.”

Andres Piza, Player of Colombia: “The idea is to contribute with the team (by making most points possible) and to do the best for the team, but it doesn’t matter to make a thousand points if my team cannot win.”
