Argentina gets third victory in

Pool B

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 5, 2016 – Argentina overcame Cuba 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15) for their third victory against one loss in Pool B of the XV Women’s Pan American Cup. Cuba sits now at 2-2.

Lucia Fresco and Tanya Acosta reached double digits in the scoring charts with 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Emilce Sosa and Florencia Busquets added 9 and 8 in the victory.

Heidy Rodriguez and Regla Gracia were the best scorers for Cuba with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Argentina edged Cuba in aces 9-8 and held the advantage in blocks 11-6. The winners benefited from 35 errors committed by the defeated side.

“The depth of our bench was a key for us against a team with a lot of power in the attack,” Sosa said. “It was a tough match and we were able to make the adjustments after a shaky first set.”

“We lost the concentration after the first set and our game spiraled down,” Cuban Sulian Matienzo said. “We couldn’t serve well after the first set and Argentina made the right things.”

“This is a game of mistakes and we reduced the errors after the first set and that was the key for the victory,” Argentinean Guillermo Orduna said. “The players followed the tactical plan.”

“Our team had a lot of ups and downs and you don’t win a match after the first set. The players need to learn from this one,” Cuban Roberto Garcia said.
