SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 19, 2015 – Argentina
defeated Mexico 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) in the second match of
opening day at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo
on Sunday.
The strong blocking of Argentina, led by Candelaria Herrera who
notched six blocks, was one of the keys to the victory of the
South American side.
Argentina held a 9-4 advantage in the blocking category and also
bested the opponents in serving aces 5-3.
Maria Corbalan and Herrera led the winners with 14 and 12
points, respectively, while Agostina Beltramino and Anahi Tosi
chipped in with 9 apiece. Mexico’s Maria Rodriguez finished with
13 points.
“The difference was our reception,” said Azul Benitez, the
captain of Argentina. “The good passing allowed us to attack
better. Winning the close first set was also important.”
“We couldn’t achieve what we wanted and we need to fine tune
some details for the next matches,” said Rodriguez, the captain
of Mexico.
“We made too many errors with our serves, but also had to take
more risks with aggressive serves,” Argentinean coach Mauro
Silvestre said.
“Losing the first set hurt our chances,” Mexican coach Luis
Alberto Leon said. “The first set our mistakes were a big
factor. It is very complicated to play against a team like
Argentina that knows how to play.” |
