TORONTO, Canada, July 22, 2015 – Argentina rolled on top of
United States in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) in a
quarterfinals match of the men’s volleyball tournament at
Toronto Pan American Games on Wednesday.
The victory moved Argentina to a semifinal match against hosts
Canada on Friday at Exhibition Center with the winner of the
other quarterfinal between Puerto Rico and Cuba slated to meet
Brazil.
It was a complete dominance by the Argentinean side from start
to finish displaying an effective offense especially from their
middle men Pablo Crer and Sebastian Sole who went 6-for-7 and
6-for-9 in their killing attempts.
Ezequiel Palacios and Jose Luis Gonzalez were the top
point-producers for Argentina with 11 and 10 points,
respectively, while Crer and Facunto Conte added 8 apiece with
Sole chipping in with 7.
Zachary La Cavera had 7 points as the top scorer of the pale
offense executed by United States against their South Americans
opponents.
Julio Velasco, Coach of Argentina: “Today we played very well.
We were very good on defense. Our blocking and defense system
worked properly. I’ve always studied the American teams in this
part of the game. We looked a lot like an American team. They
also defended a lot, but we organized our counter-attack and put
a lot of pressure by serving. So this was a great match because
after the defeat we suffered yesterday, we needed a win like
this.”
Facundo Conte, Captain of Argentina: “I am very glad because the
team played very well, well focused. The team kept the
concentration in all the things we had to do to win this match.
That was the difference that we made since the beginning of the
match until the end, we kept that control and marked a
difference in the points scored.”
Charles Sullivan, Coach of United States: “Argentina’s defense
is so good. We tried to hit the ball, to go for the points, but
they controlled it.. We tried to get better (on the second set),
but their defense is really good.”
Andrew Nally, Captain of USA: “It was a tough match. They came
out with a lot of consistency. We played a tough match last
night so it was a quick turnaround for us, and unfortunately
they got on us early and we couldn’t really come back.” |
