Argentina undefeated despite pressure from Mexico

CALLAO, Peru, June 14, 2015 – Argentina added another victory this time in four sets by defeating Mexico (25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-18) in the second day of Pool A of the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao.

Argentina was the superior team in attacks (43-39) and blocking (13-4) and also made lesser errors with 29 compared to 39 by the Mexicans.

The South Americans needed a change in strategy and players to overcome the surge of a Mexican team that showed a lot of character and strength. Argentina used their usual fiery spirit to resist the pressure from a rival seeking for its first victory in the competition.

The top scorer of the match was Mexican Lizbeth Sainz with 14 points, while for the winning team the best scorer was the captain Yamila Nizetich with 13 points.

Yamila Nizetich, the captain of Argentina: “Today we didn’t play the way we are used to. Mexico put pressure with their serves and we made many errors. It has been difficult to adjust the new members of the team but I am confident our performance will be improving.”

Dulce Carranza, captain of Mexico, was visibly disappointed with the result saying: “Today our team showed a better performance than the day before but the effort didn’t pay off.”

Guillermo Orduna, coach of Argentina: “Argentina was not at our usual level, but at the end the result is what counts and we got it. We won the match with something else than the good technical game. The character of the group showed at the difficult times and we were able to close a match that was complicated.”

Jorge Miguel Azair, coach of Mexico: “Despite today’s loss I am glad with the performance of my team, which was completely different than yesterday. We are into a new process with young girls who need to adjust to the high level competition.”
