LIMA, Peru, May 10, 2015 – Argentina overcame a resilient
Dominican Republic to claim the gold medal at the Final Four U18
Girls’ Gatorade Cup with a 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 17-25, 21-25,
15-9) victory at Niño Héroe Manuel Bonilla Coliseum on Sunday.
It is the third tournament won by the Argentinean side added to
the victories at the U18 Pan American Cup in Havana, Cuba and
the Invitational Baja California Cup in Mexico earlier this
year.
Both Argentina and Dominican Republic are teams qualified to the
FIVB U18 Girls’ World Championship to be played in Lima, Peru
next August.
Maria Corbalan led Argentina with 22 points followed by Anahí
Tosí and Brenda Chur{in with 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Dominican Republic’s Massiel Matos led all the players in the
match with 28 points while Vielka Peralta had 14 points and
Madeline Guillén added 11 in the loss.
“Complicated matches help us a lot,” Argentina’s coach Mauro
Silvestre said. “That’s when you have to raise your level with
high risk serves. I am glad for the victory but the most
important thing is the growth of the team. We improved the
reception and step by step our blocking and defense, those were
our goals coming to this tournament.”
“The first two sets were bad for us,” said Alexandre Ceccato,
the Brazilian coach of Dominican Republic. “Our team always has
had a strong attack so we were able to come back but we still
have problems with the reception.” |
