SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, April 23, 2015 – Argentina
defeated Chile in straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-14) in a
battle that pitted South American teams in day five of the U20
Women’s Pan American Cup at Ricardo Arias Pavilion in Santo
Domingo.
The Argentineans finished the round-robin phase with a 4-1
win-loss record good for second place and a berth in Friday’s
gold medal match against hosts Dominican Republic.
The winners established their pace during the whole match and
held the advantages in attacks (42-26), blocks (9-3) and aces
(4-1).
Maria Corbalan led Argentina with 19 points, including two aces,
followed by Anahi Tosi and Fiamma Biain with 12 and 10 points,
respectively, while Candela Nota chipped in with 8 tallies in
the victory. Chile’s best scorer was Catalina Melo with 8
points.
“We knew it was going to be a tough match so we went into the
court with our batteries charged,” Argentina’s Azul Benitez
said. “We followed our game plan and we are ready for the
revenge against Dominican Republic.”
“It was a tough match and we made too many errors and they took
advantage of them,” Chile’s Melo said. “Too many serves out of
bounds and too many failed attacks.”
“I am very glad because this was a match as tough as the one
against Dominican Republic,” Argentina’s Mauro Silvestre
commented. “We know the group of Chile and it is a good one.
They also have some good skilled players. We improved our serves
but there is room to continue progressing. Our plan was to start
with a good serve and focus in the defense since our blocking is
not very high.”
“The stats show they played good defense and cause many errors
from our side,” Chile’s Hugo Jauregui said. “The first two sets
were very close but in the third set the difference showed and
we lost many points.” |
