CALLAO, Peru, June 16, 2015 - Argentina edged Puerto Rico in
five sets 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-10) extending its
winning streak to four victories without losses in Pool A of the
XVI Women’s Pan American Cup at Miguel Grau Coliseum of Callao.
The Argentineans scored 18 blocks with Emilce Sosa leading the
way with a tournament-high 9 blocks which contributed to her
leading total of 24 points for the match.
Yamila Nizetich had 18 markers in the victory while Lucia Fresco
and Florencia Busquets added 11 and 10, respectively. Yarimar
Rosa (16), Stephanie Enright (15) and Aury Cruz (14) finished
with double figures for Puerto Rico.
Yamila Nizetich, captain of Argentina: “We faced an erratic
Puerto Rico for the first two sets of the match, but they showed
capacity to advance and we lost the control a little bit. Our
character helped us to move forward and claim an important
victory.”
Yarimar Rosa, captain of Puerto Rico: “Every time we play
Argentina we expect an intense match. Today our offensive system
started to sync in the third set and that was the key to
continue moving on and stay within the game. At the end we
couldn’t make it.”
Guillermo Orduna, coach of Argentina, highlighted the work as a
team. “We knew that during the match long rallies would happen
and had to work to win those rallies. We made fewer errors in
the most important moments and that was the key for the win.”
Jose Mieles, coach of Puerto Rico: “Today our game didn’t work
at the beginning and had to look for some alternatives with
players and put them in new positions. We committed many
mistakes and they hurt us down the middle both in attacks and in
blocks. Tomorrow we will go out looking for a result that can
put us closer to our objective.” |
