Canada downs Mexico in thrilling match
MAYAGÜEZ, Puerto Rico, August 29, 2011. - Canada defeated Mexico
3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 25-22) in the first match of Pool A at
the Men’s NORCECA Championship at the “Palacio de los Deportes”
in Mayagüez.
In what was the most exciting match so far, Canada downed Mexico
using all of its abilities to dismantle Mexico´s great defensive
display. It was anyone’s win as the score always had a thin
margin in between, making the second and third set the most
challenging ones.
Frederic Winters registered 20 points to contribute with the
winners and also with double digits, 13 and 12 points by
Alexandre Gaumont and Gavin Schmitt respectively. On the Mexican
side, Gerardo Contreras also scored 20 points, followed by Jorge
Quiñones with 12.
“It wasn’t easy to beat Mexico, we are glad of the outcome and
for us it’s a good start”, said Frederic Winters captain from
Canada.
While Gerardo Contreras, Mexico’s captain, indicated “we need to
be more consistent, to improve for the Pan American Games in
Guadalajara which are our main goal right now, Canada scored
important points that made the difference.”
Glenn Hoag coach of Canada was pleased with the result but
admitted they had problems with their attack “we need more
stability in winning points, obviously I’m happy and I want to
congratulate Mexico who we respect because they play with the
heart.”
“We need to begin to win with more serenity, I know we are able
to control matches with defense, which is part of our process,
it was a tough loss” the words of Mexican coach, Jorge Azair. |
