Colombia in historical
victory at CAC
CORDOBA, México, Noviembre 29, 2014 - Bahamas gave the big
surprise of the classification round for places 5 to 8 after
beating Colombia in straight sets 32-30, 27-25 y 25-19 at the
XXII Central American and Caribbean Games.
This was a historical victory for the Bahamas, in their first
Central American and Caribbean Games, and will look to contend
for fifth place on Sunday. Captain PrinceTanique Wilson and
Middle Blocker Shonari Hepburn registered 13 points apiece,
while Byron Ferguson closed with 12 for the Bahamas, that also
outclassed Colombia in blocks (9-6) and serves (6-3). Andres
Piza scored 16 for Colombia and Kevin Carabali closed with 11.
The first set (32-20) was the one with more points scored, at
the tournament, with a total of 62.
“These are our first Central American and Caribbean Games and
this is our first victory at this tournament. It is a big
accomplishment. I’m very happy to win. We had fell short
previously but were mentally prepared that anything could be
possible,” stated PrinceTanique Wilson, captain of Bahamas.
“We played in a very difficult pool, but we had nothing to lose.
We had only to fight hard every match. Thank you to the Mexican
fans for making us feel like we were at home. This is a
historical result for our program,” Devince Smith, coach of
Bahamas remarked.
“First of all I want to congratulate Bahamas. Once again you can
see that there is no small opponent. We have a lot of things to
think about and a lot of work to do,” stated Colombian captain,
Alexander Moreno.
“Many people think than in paper we were the favorites, but I
was pretty convinced since the beginning that this was going to
be difficult. I want to congratulate Bahamas for such a great
match,” said Daniel Moine, coach of Colombia. |
