Bahamas scores surprising victory over Guatemala

LANGLEY, Canada, September 26, 2013 - Bahamas produced the biggest surprise on the third day of the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship with a straight set win over Guatemala (25-18, 25-21, 25-23).

Prince’Tanique Wilson scored 14 points (2 aces) for Bahamas, followed by Renaldo Knowles with 13 and Byron Ferguson with 11. Andy Leonardo Blanco closed with 12 for Guatemala.

“It was a victory that we needed to advance to play for seventh place. We started to play very well but had some inconsistency. We didn’t want to finish last in tournament. Tomorrow, we will look for another win and to get the chance to finish higher,” Wilson said.

“We didn’t really expect that this match could end this way, with a 3-0. We thought that the guys could go out and work harder. Congratulations to Bahamas because they knew how to do their game. We must keep on working over our mistakes because you cannot win if you make those mistakes,” Guatemala’s head coach Reider Lucas Mora said.

“They fought hard. Things didn’t go right in the first and second sets. Bahamas played hard until the end and we finished a little bit sad because we gave it all on the court,” stated Guatemalan captain Oscar Garcia.

“Our guys were very well settled in this match. We made some errors, but worked well with our jump serves. Guatemala is a pretty experienced team, but we were able to capitalize some of their errors,” Bahamas coach Raymond Wilson said.
