SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, August 28, 2015 - Barbados won
their second straight match as they continued their defense of
the CAZOVA under 19 championships being staged at the G.C.
Foster College in Spanish Town, Jamaica on Friday morning.
Coming off their 3-1 victory over host country Jamaica Thursday
night, Barbados picked up from where they left off defeating
Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 to be 2-0 in the four-team tournament.
Barbados was in total control throughout winning 25-12, 25-17,
25-18 in the match that lasted just 72 minutes.
Like he was against Jamaica against which he scored 15 spikes,
Brandon Callender delivered 13 against the Jamaicans who battled
hard but proved to be no match for their eastern Caribbean
opponents.
Defeated head coach Gideon Dickson conceded that the defending
champions may have played the best game of the tournament so
far. “They played the best game of volleyball this morning
whilst we improved on yesterday’s performance but it wasn’t
sufficient to beat Barbados today,” he said afterwards.
Meanwhile, Jamaica notched their first win of the competition
rebounding from their 1-3 loss to the defending champions to
beat Haiti 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 29-27, 25-20). The match proved to
be a keen defensive battle between the teams that were seeking
their first win, but it was the in the third set that Jamaica
came into their own and then went on to win relatively easily in
the fourth.
Trailing 22-17 in the third set, Jamaica rallied behind some
strong play from setter O’ Neil Daley, and their offensive
hitter Shavar James who registered 14 spikes and was supported
by Jovan Thomas who had 11 kills.
Jamaica’s head coach Steve Davis said his team improved
appreciably from the encounter against Barbados on Thursday.
“Today they concentrated for a longer period, they remained
focused. That is their weakness because they are a young team,
under-prepared but I am so proud of them,” he said.
