SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, August 29, 2015 - Defending champions
Barbados defeated Haiti three sets to one to advance to Sunday's
final of the CAZOVA U19 Championships at the G.C Foster College
auditorium in Spanish Town Jamaica on Saturday afternoon.
There they will meet the winner of the Jamaica/Trinidad and
Tobago match up scheduled for later Saturday.
On the back of strong offensive and defensive play, the
defending champs won 25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22 against a
stubborn Haitian team. It was their fourth straight victory in
the competition and began with a win over hosts Jamaica last
Thursday.
Brandon Callender had an outstanding game registering 25 spikes
as he and Omari Taylor with seven spikes peppered their Haitian
opponents. Denilson Francois continued to be the outstanding
player for the now eliminated Haitian youngsters. He registered
13 spikes and had three kill blocks.
The consensus among the coaches is that Barbados has played the
best volleyball so far this tournament which makes them
favorites to retain their title but Head Coach John Stuart
believes his team is not playing to their full potential.
"I am pleased in having won the semifinals and getting through
to the semifinals but with our overall play I am not so
pleased," he said."We're making too many unforced errors."
Stuart surmised that maybe the team that has passed and blocked
well throughout the tournament may be lacking a bit of focus
which could be causing the unforced errors.
He said however, that should they start to apply greater focus
they will reduce the number of errors in the final. If that is
the case, "they should be fine."
Haitian coach Adolphe Rudolph‘s team ended their debut in the
competition without a win but cites inexperience as a major
factor for the team's failings. |
