Barbados beat Suriname for first victory
HAVANA, May 23, 2014 – Barbados claimed its first victory by
defeating Suriname in three sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) in the
last day of the preliminary round of the NORCECA Men’s World
Championship Qualification Tournament Pool P.
The winners were more effectives with their serves and attacks
with the veteran player Shawn Simpson leading the offense with
12 points, which keep him among the top scorers of the event.
Kyle Browne added nine points, in the victory.
Zenafio Breinburg topped Suriname with 11 points and Keven
Sporkslede contributed eight.
Ludger Niles, Coach of Barbados: “We were better prepared and
player better. Yesterday’s training paid its fruits as we
focused in the practice of the serves. We want to be
psychological prepared for tomorrow and win the third place.”
Alain London, Captain of Barbados: “We were more confident, more
relaxed and the opponents did not put much resistance. We wanted
to win quickly to have time to rest and be ready for the match
for the bronze medal.”
Jerry Slijngard, Coach of Suriname: “It was not a bad game. We
had some difficulties with the serve reception and that’s
something we need to work if we want to win tomorrow.”
Roberto Joval, Captain of Suriname: “We had a good start but
lost strength at the end of the first set and after that our
opponents dominated the game. We are going to review what we did
wrong since we still have to play the key match.” |
