WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, July 11, 2015 - Barbados whipped Trinidad
and Tobago 25-15, 25-11, 25-11 to advance to the gold-medal
match in the CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association)
Youth Girls’ Championships.
It was the second time that the teams had met in the under-18
tournament and the story was similar to Thursday’s opening match
when T&T also failed to win a set.
In fact, Barbados have not dropped a set in the tournament and
their other victims, Bonaire and Curacao, clashed right after in
the second semifinal for the opportunity to attempt to gain
revenge in tomorrow’s final.
The defeat meant that T&T were dethroned after being crowned
champions in all three previous editions of the tournament.
But although the 54-minute contest was the shortest match of the
tournament, Bajan coach Shennel Pooler was not satisfied because
she felt her team committed too many unforced errors and she
pointed that “I don’t want to dwell too much on our win because
the focus is on the next game (the final).”
Captain Ashley Jordan, who scored a game-high 18 points, six
more than teammate Aaliyah Durant, was also unhappy with the
overall performance of her team but is “looking forward to the
final.”
Trinidad and Tobago assistant coach Courtnee Mae Clifford
congratulated the winners and conceded “they are a well-rounded
team with really good serves and defense. They shut down our
game plan and, although we tried our best, we were too
inconsistent.”
Barbados completely dominated every category – 24-9 in kills,
12-5 in service winners and 9-3 in blocked shots. |
