SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, August 28, 2015 - Defending champion
Barbados defeated Haiti Friday night as the preliminary round
matched in the 2015 CASOVA U19 Championships concluded at GC
Foster College auditorium in Spanish Town Jamaica.
Barbados has been unbeaten in their three matches so far and
looks favorites to successfully defend the title they won last
year. They defeated hosts Jamaica on the opening night of
competition on Thursday and on Friday defeated both Trinidad and
Tobago and Haiti.
Hosts Jamaica meanwhile, racked up their second win of the
competition defeating Trinidad and Tobago in four sets.
Fourteen spikes from Brandon Callender and nine from Omari
Taylor helped Barbados defeat the winless Haitians 25-15, 25-23,
19-25, 25-20.
They were also defensively sound for the Haitians who continue
to search for their killer instinct. Akeel Oxley produced 17
digs, seven more than teammate Jiovanni FordeWatson as the
streaking Barbadians repelled Haiti’s every attempt to gain
momentum. Middle blocker Francois Denilson with 17 spikes and
four kill blocks was perhaps Haiti’s most effective player in a
losing cause.
In the final game of the preliminary round Jamaica continues to
rebound from its opening match loss to Barbados with their
second straight win, this time over Trinidad and Tobago. Jamaica
dominated the match to secure the win in four sets 25-12, 21-25,
25-16, 25-12.
Jovan Thomas and Shavar James with 12 and 11 spikes
respectively, continued with their strong performances which
helped the hosts to perhaps their easiest win to date against a
disappointing Trinidadian team that has now lost their last two
matches.
The semi-final round begins on Saturday with Barbados meeting
Haiti at 3:00 pm (4:00 ECT) while Jamaica take on Trinidad and
Tobago at 5:00 pm (6:00 pm ECT) |
