WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, July 9, 2015 - Three-time defending
champions Trinidad and Tobago were convincingly beaten 25-14,
25-9, 25-23 in the opening match of the CAZOVA Youth Girls’
Championships.
After being virtually untouchable in the first two sets, the
Barbadian under-18 players trailed for most of the third, but
after taking their first lead at 21-20, they hung on to close it
out in 67 minutes.
Skipper Ashley Jordan and Aaliyah Durant were the dominant
attackers with 17 and 14 points, respectively, while captain
Nicolette De Mille led the way for T&T with eight points.
Barbados had more than three times more spike winners (32-10)
that their opponents and also led in blocked shots (6-2) and
service winners (6-1).
“I think it was a good effort overall, but we have much more
potential”, stated Jordan, while coach Shenelle Pooler noted
that “we have to keep focusing on our serve, we have strong
servers and trust our defense to work for us.”
T&T coach Idalmis Gato Moya emphasized that her team is young
and promised a better showing in the next game, while De Mille
said that “we don’t have much experience and were nervous at the
beginning. We need to cut down on our errors.” |
