Barbados wins five-set match for seventh
BURNABY, Canada. May 17, 2026: Barbados finishes seventh overall at
the U19 NORCECA Boys’ Continental Volleyball Championship in
Burnaby, British Columbia.
After losing the first set in today’s classification match with
Dominican Republic, Barbados switched the momentum winning the next
two sets with the Dominican team forcing a fifth.
Eventually, Dominican Republic’s errors (32-26) contributed to the
2-3 (25-17, 23-25, 13-25, 25-22, 13-15) loss to Barbados. Dominican
led in attack points (60-56), but Barbados led in blocks (8-5) and
aces were tied at 8 apiece.
Barbados coach Elwyn Oxley said that although his team did not
qualify for the Worlds (with a top-four result) in this tournament,
they ended on a positive note: “Despite the fact that we didn’t
achieve what we came here for, I’m really impressed with the
performance and in particular with the energy that they came out
with today. I think if we had played with the same intensity
throughout the tournament, we would have been in a better position.
But today I’m very ecstatic with the win. … Our energy and mental
performance really made the difference today.”
Ronal Rodríguez, Dominican outside hitter, was the match top scorer
with 29 points.
Jordan John of Barbados was next on the scoresheet with 20 points.
