WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, July 10, 2015 - Barbados overpowered the
hosts 25-8, 25-15, 25-13 to impressively conclude the
round-robin phase of the CAZOVA Youth Girls’ Championships
without dropping a set.
Skipper Ashley Jordan (15) and Aaliyah Durant (ten) were the
only players to score in double figures in the 56-minute
contest, which was the final and shortest match of the first
phase of the competition.
It was so one-sided that Barbados had 30 kills, 24 more than
their opponents, and ten of the 11 service winners. The only
department in which Curacao matched the visitors was in blocked
shots as the teams finished with five each.
Barbados coach Shennel Pooler said “I told you before the
tournament that we came to win and our aim is go through the
tournament without dropping a set.”
And skipper Jordan added “the girls have potential, but there is
still room for improvement.”
“I don’t want to make excuses, but three of our top players were
out with injury”, said Curacao’s coach Patricio Bridgewater, who
also conceded that Barbados is the best team in the tournament.
Curacao, Bonaire and Trinidad and Tobago each finished with one
win each, but Bonaire had the best ratio and ended up second.
In tomorrow’s first semifinal at 5 p.m., Barbados will face T&T,
who finished fourth and last in the round-robin after winning
the three previous editions of this under-18 tournament.
Two hours before, Bonaire will get the opportunity for revenge
after squandering a 13-9 lead and in the fifth and final set and
losing to Curacao on Thursday night.
The gold-match is 6 p.m. on Sunday, two hours after the battle
for the bronze. |
