Belize City, July 12, 2022.-
Belize won 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-23) against
Nicaragua in the closing match of the XIX
Central American U21 Women's Volleyball
Championship.
Bruce Gareth with 18 points was
the best for the Belizeans and Fatoumata Camara
had 14 units. For Nicaragua, Gilmary Smith was
limited to 10 points. Belize was superior in
offense 42-29 and in aces 8-3, but Nicaragua was
better in blocking 5-4, although they committed
20 errors to 21 for the winners.
Sofía Solano, from Belize, became
the first libero to be appointed as captain in
the history of AFECAVOL tournaments, while her
teammates did a great job offensively.
“For me it is a great honor to be
the team captain, I think I was appointed
because of my leadership and because my
teammates trust me. Today we played a great
game, we have the support of our people and we
want to have a great tournament. Things went
well, we played as we have been working and that
gives us confidence”, said Solano.
José Ramón Fontes, from Belize:
“We started with a victory in a very even
competition and that gives us a lot of
satisfaction. We had a good match especially in
the first two sets. We have done a very hard job
that is now bearing fruit; we have a good team,
they have a lot of potential and they have grown
in volleyball”.
Francesca Medrano, captain of
Nicaragua: “We started out nervous, then we
tried to pick up the pace of the game but it was
too late… but I think Nicaragua will raise its
name. We need to improve the reception, I think
we saw ourselves well in some aspects and based
on that we have to aim”. |
