CAGUAS, Puerto Rico, September 20, 2015 – Dominican Brayelin
Martinez, who steered her side to an unprecedented champions
title was named the Most Valuable Player of the FIVB Women’s U20
World Championship in an epic five-set victory over Brazil.
The towering Martínez joined little Brenda Castillo as the two
Dominicans who have captured the coveted title at the age-group
tournament. Castillo took the honors in 2009 when the Dominican
Republic was runner-ups in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico.
“I feel very good and happy - this is once in a lifetime,”
Martinez said after the award ceremony. “It feels good to win
the MVP as this is my last tournament in this category and I
feel very good because I did my job and could help my team.
“I knew we were going to win; we just needed patience and
concentration. If you lose that in games like this you can lose
it all,” she added.
Martinez closed the tournament on a hot streak firing 27, 27 and
32 points in consecutive days against Peru, Italy and Brazil,
respectively.
Besides her MVP title, Martinez was named to the All-Star Team
as First Outside Spiker while also claiming the scoring title
with 177 points in eight contests for an average of 22.12 points
per match.
The players included in the All-Star were:
Mikati Shirai, Japan (Setter); Brayelin Martinez, Dominican
Republic (First Outside Spiker); Bojana Milenkovic, Serbia
(Second Outside Spiker); Maja Aleksic, Serbia (First Middle
Blocker); Anna Danesi, Italy (Second Middle Blocker); Lorenne
Geraldo, Brazil (Opposite); Zhana Todorova, Bulgaria (Libero). |
