– In a match that was emotional at times, Brazil took a 25-22,
25-22, 25-14 victory over Puerto Rico in Pan American Cup pool
play on Thursday at the Reno Events Center.
Brazil (2-0) will finish pool play on Friday against Canada
(2-0). Puerto Rico (0-2) will look for its first win against
Dominican Republic (0-2).
Puerto Rico kept close to the South Americans in the first two
sets as both teams showed great fire and emotion. In the third
set, Brazil opened up a 15-8 lead and Puerto Rico let the
pressure get to it, drawing a red card. Brazil coasted to the
victory.
Brazil led in spikes (49-34) and blocks (7-3) while Puerto Rico
held the edge in aces (4-1). Brazil scored on 18 Puerto Rico
errors while committing 17. Brazil’s hitting efficiency was .526
while Puerto Rico’s was .274.
Brazil outside hitter Joao Ferreira led all scorers with 16
points on a match-high 15 spikes and one block. Douglas Souza
added 15 points on 12 spikes, two blocks and one ace.
Puerto Rico was paced by outside hitter Jackson Rivera with 15
points on 12 spikes and a match-high three aces. Opposite
Maurice Torres added 10 points on 10 spikes. |
