LIMA, Peru, June 16, 2015 - Brazil overcame a tough first-set
duel and went on to defeat Peru in straight sets 3-0 (30-28,
25-20, 25-20) to equal their win-loss record at 2-2 in Pool B of
the XIV Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup at Eduardo Dibos
Coliseum of Lima. The defeated side dropped to 0-4.
Lorenne Geraldo carried on her shoulders the load of the
Brazilian offense and finished with a match-high 20 points and
was seconded by Gabriela Candido with 9 tallies. Angela Leyva
and Maguilaura Frias had 17 and 10 points, respectively, for
Peru.
Brazilian Geraldo said: “We played as a team and got many points
in counterattacks. Despite the victory there is a lot of space
to grow and the only way to do it is training and playing
against players with more experience.”
Mauricio Thomas, coach of Brazil: “It was a classic South
American, two teams with a lot of power in their serves but the
pressure for winning induced to some errors and that’s because
of lack of experience. The first set was pretty even, in the
second we were behind but could block better and in the third
the participation of players from the bench boosted the energy
to get the win.”
Clarivett Yllescas, the captain of Peru: “The spirit was better
but the team goes down in a hurry. We couldn’t keep the lead. We
feel desperate when the opponent scores three or four points in
a row and they don’t know how to shake off the problems. We
could have battle more and close the game in our favor. Now we
have a lot of work to do and improve the attitude to win the
match for the Grand Prix.”
“In the first set we started strong and had a three-point lead
that we couldn’t manage. We wasted the chances we had in the
second and third set but the mistakes complicated things and now
we have to be calm to fix what is not working properly to battle
the qualification with Colombia”, said Peru’s coach Mauro
Marasciulo. |
