Brazil opens Women’s Volleyball over Puerto Rico

CALI, Colombia, December 1, 2021.- Brazil opened the Women’s Volleyball Tournament of the I Junior Pan American Games over Puerto Rico 3-1(25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15) at the Evangelista Mora Coliseum.

 

Puerto Rico pressed Brazil leading the third set, but came out stronger giving little opportunities for any surprises.

 

Brazil earned their first win in pool B with superior blocking by a 14-8, they also held advantage in attacks 52-40 and a slim 4-3 in serves, but committing more errors than Puerto Rico (32-25).

 

Outside hitter Mayara Barcelos da Silva scored a match-high of 22 points in Brazil’s victory, joined by opposite hitter Lorrayna Da Silva with 15 points and middle blocker Diana Duarte with 12 points.

 

Puerto Rico’s leading scorers were outside hitter and captain Ivania Ortiz with 17 points all on kills and outside hitter Valeria Flores with 10 points also on kills.

 

On day two of competition, Brazil will face Peru and Puerto Rico plays Dominican Republic.

 

Jackeline Moreno, captain of Brazil: “It was our first match and as every debut we were really nervous, that made us commit too many errors and not make the right choices. Kudos to Puerto Rico, they played really well. But we made our debut with a victory and we are really glad”.

 

Ivania Ortiz, captain of Puerto Rico: “In the set we won, we tried to commit fewer errors and play smart because Brazil is taller than us; I believe our intelligence in offense kept us ahead”.
