CALI, Colombia, December 2, 2021 - The third day
of beach volleyball battles at the Cali 2021 Pan
American Games was blessed with the sun that
warmed up the 14 matches of the round of 16 and
quarter-finals. The crossed matches of the men's
semifinals were defined: Brazil vs Chile and
Cuba vs Mexico. In addition, Brazil guaranteed
South America's quota for the Santiago 2023
Games.
In the first hour, the men's teams from Chile (Aravena
/ Droguett), Ecuador (León / Jurado), Colombia (Noriega
/ Yeferson) and Brazil (Renato / Rafael) won
their matches and celebrated winning places in
the quarterfinals . Colombia and Brazil needed
three sets to beat Costa Rica (14/21, 22/20,
15/9) and Nicaragua (19/21, 21/13, 15/12) to the
delight of the fans that were on the Panamerican
Courts of Cali.
In ladies, the duos from Guatemala (Alvarado /
Quiñonez), Canada (Tresham / Glagau), Peru (Allcca
/ Gaona) and Paraguay (Janina / Laura) went to
the next phase. The most prominent matches in
the fight for a place in the quarterfinals were
between Guatemala and Argentina, Cuba and
Paraguay. The South Americans Najul / Brito fell
on 21/17, 19/21, with the tie break 21/19. But
the Paraguayans won (21/23, 21/19 and 21/19) an
exciting match that also had a long third set.
The afternoon round defined the semifinalists of
the men's tournament. On court 2, matches were
played from 13 to 16 place.
In the first game for the place in the
semifinals, a South American encounter featuring
the pairs of Chile (Aravena / Droguett) and
Paraguay (Riveros / Giuliano). The Chileans won
2-0 (21/15, 21/18). Immediately afterwards, the
Cubans Diaz / Reyes beat the Ecuadorians Leon /
Jurado 21/16, 22/20 and took the second place in
the semis.
In another South American classic, Brazil, with
the Renato / Rafael twins, it took three sets to
continue to the semifinal. The Brazilians beat
Capogrosso / Amieva, from Argentina, 11/21,
20/22, 17/15.
The last game of definition for the semis was
between Colombia (Noriega / Yerferson) and
Mexico (Sarabia / Stephens). Mexico closed the
victory on 21/17, 21/14 and will compete with
Cuba for the Santiago 2023 Games. |
