SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 15,
2021 – Samantha Bricio fired 25 points,
including five aces, carrying Mexico to a 3-2
(22-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10) victory over
Cuba in a match between winless teams at the
Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on
Wednesday.
Cuba had the upper hand in attacks 61-47 and
blocks 13-9 while Mexico held the advantage in
the services category 10-8 and fewer errors 25
to 32 by the defeated side.
Mexicans Maria Rodriguez, Grecia Castro and
Karina Flores contributed 16, 15 and 14 points
in the victory.
Claudia Tarin led Cuba with 18 points followed
by Yensy Kindelan with 12, including a
tournament-high five blocks, and Thalia Moreno
with 11 tallies.
Rafael Petry, coach of Mexico: “One of the keys
to overcome the deficit was the contribution by
setter Karem Rivera who came off the bench and
that’s part of the process. I mean to have a
U-23 player helping the team. It was an
important victory. Now to focus on getting a
victory against Puerto Rico to make the semis.”
Joel Olazabal, coach of Cuba: “Now we have three
days of competition added to the five days of
training in Cuba to get more stability and
better coordination between the setters and the
attackers. The Mexican team made many errors
which gave us some breath and the chance of
winning two sets.” |
