WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, July 12, 2015 - Barbados expectedly
captured the gold medal in the CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal
Volleyball Association) Youth Girls’ Championships when they
whipped Bonaire 25-14, 25-8, 25-22.
It was a dream run to gold as the Barbadians did not drop a
single set from any of their five matches.
Their potent attacking pair of skipper Ashley Jordan and Aaliyah
Durant stepped up again to lead them home with 19 and ten
points, respectively.
Captain Jahena Angela, who had scored a tournament-high 32
points when Bonaire defeated defending champions Trinidad and
Tobago in the round-robin stage on Friday night, led the way for
her team again with eight points.
Barbados crushed their opponents 22-8 on kills and 21-7 on
service winners, but only had a marginal (5-3) edge on blocked
shots in the contest, which just went past the hour-mark.
Triumphant coach Shennel Pooler, who achieved her goal of
leading her team to victory without dropping a set, stated that
she very happy for her girls and feels “the future of the sport
in the Caribbean is in good hands.”
Bonaire was participating in the tournament for the first time
and Pooler commended them on reaching the final and challenging
her team in the third set.
“The fight came a little too late, and perhaps the players were
a little tired,” said Bonaire’s coach Rudy Anthony, who also
congratulated the champs. |
