CASATAWAYS BEACH, Antigua, January 22, 2016 - Pre-Tournament
favourites, Trinidad and Tobago led a quartet of teams from the
Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) advancing to the
main draw semifinals on the first day of the Second Round of
NORCECA Continental Cup qualifiers to this year’s Rio de Janeiro
Olympic Games Beach Volleyball Tournament.
Joining T&T, winners of the CAZOVA Round One qualifiers on home
soil, in the last four of the main draw were Curacao, Jamaica
and U.S. Virgin Islands who all reached the Third Round of
NORCECA Qualifiers as well later this year.
However, it was not all smooth sailing for the top two ranked
CAZOVA teams in T&T and Jamaica as they were both taken to
“Golden Set” quarterfinal deciders by Barbados and Suriname
respectively after getting round-of-16 byes.
For T&T, it was “Déjà vu” all over again as just as they did in
the regional final with Jamaica last year, its top ranked team
of Daneil Williams and Fabien Whitfield had to come to their
team rescue with a “Golden Set” win over Barbadians Kyle Browne
and Ronald Rice 15-10 to secure a 3-2 team triumph and a main
draw semifinal spot against Curacao on Saturday.
Curacao booked its placed in the main draw semifinals by
battling past St Vincent and The Grenadines, 3-2 via a “Golden
Set” in the round-of-16 and then Antigua & Barbuda, which was on
a first round bye, 3-0.
