HAVANA, Cuba, June 19, 2015 - Canada's
men's team came out strong and then held on to capture a 3-1
(25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Cuba in Pool C of FIVB
Volleyball World League at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum Friday
evening.
Canada’s Steve Marshall fired 17 points from the attack line and
scored a block for 18 total, while teammate Toontje Van Lankvelt
scored 16 points. Rolando Cepeda contributed 16 points for Cuba.
In Tehran, Iran, Shahram Mahmoudi scored 17 points to lead Iran
to a 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 25-20 victory over the previously
unbeaten USA who were no match for the home side.
The win opens the door for Poland to move level on points with
the USA in Pool B, whilst Iran will go into the remaining
fixtures with hope of taking second place.
Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell each had 13 points for USA.
Seyed Mousavi had 10 points for the winners.
In Istanbul, Turkey, Montenegro had to work hard for their 3-1
(25-19, 28-26, 22-25, 25-13) win over Puerto Rico on Saturday in
Group 3. The European side has dominated Pool F so far having
dropped just two sets in five victories.
Vojin Cacic topped Montenegro with 17 points. Jean Carlos Ortiz
and Jackson Rivera had 15 and 12 points, respectively, for
Puerto Rico.
In Thessaloniki, Greece, China defeated Mexico 3-1 (25-11,
23-25, 18-25, 25-15) for their sixth win in a row also in Group
3. Mexico suffered their fifth defeat in as many games.
China's Zhejia Zhang and Qingyao Dai scored 12 points each,
including four booming aces from Zhang.
Jorge Barajas had 13 for Mexico. |
